Twenty years ago, the split at Southport Printing was probably 80% offset and 20% digital. While offset printing still has a big part to play in the overall scheme of printing, digital printing has declined in cost, increased in quality, speed and paper choice flexibility. Today, digital printing easily represents 80% of our work.
Why Digital?
Digital printing has assumed a growing share of the print market over the last 20+ years. That long ago, it was inconceivable to think of printing 100 brochures in full color because of the setup expense involved in traditional (i.e. "offset") printing. Now it's customary for an artist to come in and make, say, 25 each of 12 versions of note/greeting cards, whereas before that same artist may have had to choose just one and print thousands in order to make them affordable.
